Engineering decisions

Validation

Functional testing against defined requirements.

Specify test conditions and expected outputs, then link observations to the hardware, firmware revision and setup used.

Test planning and verification

  • Acceptance criteria
  • Recorded observations
  • Issue tracking

Match the test to the engineering question

Calibration, reset and connection loss can exercise different paths from normal operation. A test plan should identify those conditions in advance. Checks may cover a firmware function, electrical interface or complete interaction, depending on the project stage and available hardware. Conclusions must reflect that coverage.

01

Observable acceptance criteria

Define the input, starting state and expected output. Use conditions that can be checked, rather than descriptions such as working correctly or feeling responsive.

02

Measurement points

Select checkpoints at decoded inputs, transmitted data, output signals or physical responses. A screen update may not establish what the connected hardware did.

03

Limits of the evidence

Record tested and untested conditions. Source review can establish implemented logic; hardware results require observations from the relevant setup. Neither automatically establishes endurance or compliance.

Engineering process

Project
process.

  1. 01

    Define the test setup

Identify the revision, configuration, equipment and starting state. Agree the operating sequence, expected result and relevant limits or interruptions.

  2. 02

    Select observation points

Decide where to capture results and what context to retain. Each observation should be traceable to the input that produced it.

  3. 03

    Perform the agreed tests

Exercise the specified conditions using available equipment and access. Record results and deviations without extending them to untested situations.

  4. 04

    Assess results and open issues

Compare observations with acceptance criteria. Mark issues as resolved, open or requiring further evidence, and identify any additional tests needed.

Depending on the agreed scope

Project
deliverables.

  • A test plan and acceptance criteria
  • Revision and setup records
  • Observations linked to test checkpoints
  • An issue list and recommended further tests

Functional checks are limited to the available setup and equipment. Certification, endurance and quantified performance require additional test plans and evidence.
