Firmware diagnosis + calibration

N64 joystick calibration

ATtiny84A firmware calibrates a replacement joystick for an N64 stick converter. The centre position and eight directional references define the usable travel and its mapping to the console’s expected output.

N64 stick calibration firmwareDelivered firmware / follow-up refinement

Engineering scope

  • ATtiny84A calibration firmware in Embedded C
  • Centre and eight-direction reference handling
  • Output review and calibration-persistence follow-up

Conceptual workflow

The calibration workflow

  1. Read the referencesUse the centre and eight directional positions.
  2. Map the stick travelRelate movement to the expected output coordinates.
  3. Review the outputCompare captured signals with applied movements.
  4. Check calibration retentionTest console reset and power cycling separately.

Calibration fault diagnosis

The reported fault was zero output on both axes after calibration. Firmware revisions addressed the conversion from calibration readings to usable coordinates, including the neutral position and outer references.

Output verification

Captured output and practical joystick movements were used to review the revisions. Logic-analyser checks compared transmitted values with the applied direction and position. Corrected firmware was delivered with the project files.

Calibration retention after restart

Follow-up tests found different calibration retention after console reset and a full power cycle. EEPROM storage and startup handling remain under review.
