Approach

Prototype refinement

Targeted revisions to firmware and PCB designs.

Investigate a specific fault or design limitation, identify the affected area and verify the proposed correction against the current revision.

Diagnosis and design revision

  • Fault diagnosis
  • Controlled revisions
  • Verification

Establish a baseline for the revision

Start with the current files, available hardware and the conditions that produce the issue. Identify the installed revision and expected result before investigating the cause. Refinement may involve firmware, PCB layout or their electrical interfaces; the evidence should determine the extent of the change.

01

Fault isolation

Incorrect output may originate in input handling, calibration, state transitions or an electrical interface. Trace the applied input through to the observed result before selecting a correction.

02

Impact of the revision

Preserve functions that already operate correctly. For component substitutions, assess electrical requirements, footprint and firmware implications alongside availability.

03

Restart and retained state

Reset, power cycling and reconnection are distinct events. Specify what should persist and what should restart, then check each relevant case against that requirement.

Engineering process

Project
process.

  1. 01

    Record the baseline

Identify design and firmware revisions, setup and input sequence. Establish whether the fault is repeatable or limited to particular conditions.

  2. 02

    Trace the fault

Inspect relevant code, connections and observations. Where hardware access permits, relate captured signals to physical inputs rather than relying solely on the interface display.

  3. 03

    Apply the revision

Change the identified logic or design area. Record the differences so the revised version can be compared with the baseline.

  4. 04

    Retest affected functions

Repeat the agreed checks and examine related functions. Document the result, remaining uncertainty and any separate follow-up investigation.

Depending on the agreed scope

Project
deliverables.

  • A baseline and reproducible issue description
  • An agreed firmware or design revision
  • A change record and comparison checks
  • Results and unresolved issues

The assignment may cover diagnosis, revision or testing. Correcting one fault does not resolve unrelated issues, and layout review does not establish that a board has been manufactured.
